How Do Models Lower Their Taxes?
Models lower their taxes by filing a Schedule C to deduct business expenses (wardrobe used only for shoots, portfolio and comp cards, agent commissions, travel to castings, camera gear, editing software, and a home studio), paying quarterly estimated taxes on Form 1040-ES to avoid penalties, and contributing to a SEP-IRA or Solo 401(k) to shrink taxable income.
Can Models Write Off Clothes?
Generally no. The IRS only allows a clothing write-off if the item is not suitable for everyday wear and is required for work, like a costume, branded uniform, or wardrobe used exclusively for a shoot and never worn outside it. Everyday outfits bought for photoshoots or content, even if never worn again, don't qualify.
What Can Models Write Off For Taxes?
Models who work as independent contractors can write off ordinary and necessary business expenses on Schedule C, including agency commissions, comp cards and portfolio costs, headshots, wardrobe and makeup used only for shoots, travel to castings and jobs, coaching and classes, and a home office used for bookings and admin work.
