FOR CONTENT CREATORS

We Called 12 Tax Firms Pretending to Be a $180K Creator. Only One Passed.

Nine of the twelve failed the same basic question. Here is what came back.

This June we called twelve tax firms pretending to be a content creator earning $180,000 a year across platform payouts, three brand deals, a Substack, an affiliate network, and a print on demand shop. We asked every firm the same cold question: how do I make sure I am not overpaying, and what should I be doing differently right now? Most tax firms are built to file a return, not to understand a business that lives across five platforms.

Twelve firms. One passed.

1 of 12

firms that passed the creator test

I had a business account and an LLC. I thought that meant I was doing it right. Nobody had ever actually looked at my numbers and told me what I was missing.

The Story

Twelve calls, one script, one pass

Same creator, same $180,000, same question, asked cold to twelve firms. Only four asked whether the creator had considered an LLC or S corp election. Only two mentioned quarterly estimated taxes without being asked. Only one asked about a home studio or equipment setup that might qualify for an accountable plan. One firm quoted a flat $400 tax prep fee and never mentioned planning at all.

The Problem

Every platform pays differently, and nobody withholds anything

If you earn from platform payouts, brand deals, affiliate links, a Substack, and a merch store, you know the problem. Every 1099 shows up at a different time from a company you barely remember working with in March. You know your RPM and your engagement rate; you do not know, with any confidence, what you actually kept last year. That is not a knock on the people answering the phones. Most local tax firms are generalists built for W-2 employees and simple Schedule Cs, and their intake script does not know what a six-figure creator looks like.

What We Tried

TurboTax, the family CPA, and a spreadsheet that died in March

Most creators try the same three things. They run everything through TurboTax and hope the software catches what a person would not. They hire the firm their parents used, which is excellent at filing a return for a dentist and has never seen a Creator Fund payout. Or they build a spreadsheet, track it for two months, and let it die by March. None of it was built for how you actually get paid, so every April the bill arrives like a penalty for a good year.

The Discovery

It was never a knowledge gap. It was a design problem.

Traditional tax firms are staffed and priced to file returns once a year. They are not staffed to sit with your platform dashboards, your Stripe payouts, and your merch P&L every quarter and tell you what to do next. Mara, a UGC creator in Austin, had an LLC, a bookkeeper from Instagram, and a habit of setting aside 25% of every payment just in case. She still owed an extra $11,300 at filing plus a penalty, because her estimates were guesses instead of calculations and nobody had run the entity math at $210,000 of brand deal income.

The FixAMADAE

One advisor, every income stream, strategy before you need it

Amadae connects your income streams into one system, platform payouts, brand deals, affiliate payouts, memberships, and merch, so you see what you actually kept, not what you grossed. A dedicated advisor builds your quarterly estimates from quarter-to-date income instead of a flat guess, evaluates whether an entity restructure lowers your self-employment tax, and tracks the deductions creators miss: gear, software, a home studio through a proper accountable plan. Real accountants, one flat monthly price, and you stop translating your business for someone new every tax season.

What the one firm that passed asked, and Amadae does

  • Entity election reviewed at $180K of mixed income
  • Quarterly estimates from quarter-to-date income
  • Home studio and gear through an accountable plan
  • Brand deal 1099s reconciled per platform
  • Strategy conversation in July, while deals are landing
  • A $400 flat fee and a six-minute call

The Proof

Mara's projected liability dropped $18,400 the next year

After an entity review and a switch to real quarterly estimates instead of a flat percentage guess, Mara's projected tax liability fell by $18,400 for the following year. Most of it came from an S corp election that finally made sense at her income. Her business account and LLC had never been the problem; nobody looking at her numbers was.

Why NowAMADAE

September 15 is closer than it feels in a good summer

Summer is when creator income runs hottest: brand budgets peak, travel content spikes, and nobody wants to think about taxes until the deadline is on top of them. If your income crossed six figures this year, the next quarterly deadline is the cheapest moment to fix what most tax firms never asked you about. Waiting until you cross $300,000 just means paying the inefficient way for another year. Amadae reviews your setup for free, with no obligation and no long-term contract.

Straight answers

Questions creators ask us

I already have an accountant. Why switch?+

There is a difference between someone who files your return in March and someone building your strategy in July while brand deals are still landing. Only one of the twelve firms we called did the second thing.

I am not big enough for this yet, am I?+

At $180,000 of mixed income you are exactly the profile where entity strategy starts paying for itself, often several times over. Waiting means paying the inefficient way for another year.

Could this get me flagged?+

It is the opposite. A documented accountable plan, properly reported brand deals, and quarterly estimates calculated from real numbers are what make an audit boring instead of dangerous.
