Your signing bonus is not taxed like your salary
Marcus signed a four-year, $9.2 million rookie deal with a $2.4 million bonus paid the week he inked. His agent said to expect about 37% withheld and move on. That 37% is the flat federal supplemental rate, and it has nothing to do with what he owed once state tax, agent fees, and his real bracket were reconciled. The following April he owed an extra $61,000 he had not budgeted.
Do this today: Before your next bonus lands, ask your accountant for a withholding reconciliation, not a withholding estimate.
