FOR INSURANCE AGENTS

I Gave The Monarch Money Budgeting App 90 Days To Track My Insurance Commissions. It Missed $18,400.

(A Great Tool for Exactly Half the Job)

Monarch will show you where your money went this month, down to the last DoorDash order. What it will not tell you is whether the carriers on your book paid you what your contract says you are owed. One agent with fourteen carrier appointments ran it for a summer and had $18,400 sitting with carriers the whole time.

90 days. 14 carriers. One missing number.

$18,400

owed by three carriers, invisible on the dashboard

I thought I had a good year because my Monarch dashboard looked healthy all summer. I actually had almost $20,000 sitting with carriers that owed it to me. Once Amadae reconciled everything, I finally had a real number for what my book is worth, not a guess.

01

Monarch tracks spending, not commission statements

Monarch syncs every transaction and auto-categorizes it beautifully. That is genuinely useful for seeing you spent $340 on gas or $1,200 on back-to-school. But it treats every deposit as ground truth. It has no field for expected commission on written premium and no way to flag a carrier statement that landed 6% short of your contract. To Monarch, a deposit is a deposit.

Do this today: Pull one carrier statement from this month and check it line by line against the deposit that hit your account.

What Monarch sees, and what it cannot

  • Every bank deposit synced and categorized
  • $340 on gas, $1,200 on back-to-school
  • Expected commission based on written premium
  • A statement that landed 6% short of contract
  • A clawback labeled as a clawback

02

Your bank balance lies to you every renewal season

Renewals are staggered across the year, carrier by carrier, policy by policy. A healthy July balance can hide three carriers that are 45 days late on a March renewal cycle. That is exactly what happened to Denise, an independent agent with fourteen carrier appointments across P&C and life. Her cash flow graph looked fine all summer. Her owed commissions did not.

Do this today: Build a renewal calendar outside your bank feed: carrier, policy, expected renewal date, expected commission. Check it monthly.

Fourteen carriers, one healthy-looking graph. Three carriers were 45 days late on a March renewal cycle and nothing on the dashboard said so.

03

A net worth dashboard cannot value what your carriers owe you

Monarch's net worth line rolls up your accounts, investments, and home equity into one satisfying number. It has zero visibility into your book of business, which for most independent agents is worth more than every other asset combined. Ask an agent what their book is worth and you get a shrug. That is an infrastructure gap, not a knowledge gap.

Do this today: Run a rough book valuation this week: annualized commission times your industry's typical renewal multiplier. Write it down and compare in six months.

1.5x to 3x

typical renewal multiplier on annualized commission for a P&C book. Monarch's net worth graph counts $0 of it.

04AMADAE

Why smart agents pair Monarch with Amadae

Monarch was never built to reconcile carrier statements, flag underpaid commissions, or track renewals across a dozen payment schedules. That is not a knock on Monarch; it is not what the product is for. Amadae sits underneath it. Instead of cross-checking fourteen statements in fourteen formats by hand, Amadae reconciles them, flags underpayments and clawbacks automatically, and tells you in plain numbers what your book generated this quarter and what it is worth. Monarch keeps your personal picture. Amadae makes sure that picture is accurate.

The 1099 you get in January is already wrong

Carriers issue your 1099-NEC from their own records, not yours. If a carrier underpaid you $4,000 during the year and never corrected it, that is the number the IRS sees on file. Most agents file with whatever shows up because it feels official. It is one carrier's version of the truth, usually the version that benefits them.

Do this today: Keep your own running log of commissions received by carrier, updated monthly, so you have a number to check the 1099 against.

One carrier's 1099 versus your contract, illustrative

Commission owed under your contract$52,000
Underpaid by the carrier, never corrected$4,000
What their 1099-NEC reports$48,000
Gap nobody catches without your own log$4,000

06

Back-to-school season is when clawbacks quietly drain your cash

Policies that lapse or cancel in summer trigger clawbacks that hit in September or October, exactly when tuition, supplies, and fall premiums are due at once. Monarch shows the clawback as a plain negative transaction with no context. The agent thinks they overspent on school shopping. It was a contractual clawback they should have reserved for months earlier.

Do this today: Set aside a clawback reserve of 5% to 10% of monthly commission in a separate account.

A 5% to 10% clawback reserve, set aside monthly, means fall clawbacks land on a cushion instead of on the tuition payment.

BONUSAMADAE

Bonus: What happened when Denise stopped guessing

Once Denise ran a full carrier reconciliation instead of trusting her bank feed, she found $18,400 in commissions three carriers owed but had never paid, plus a clawback from a lapsed auto policy that Monarch had logged as a routine expense months earlier. Commission income in any industry hides discrepancies a personal budgeting app was never designed to catch.

Questions creators ask us

Do I have to give up Monarch?+

No. Keep it for personal spending, savings goals, and the net worth graph. Amadae handles the commission math underneath it so that graph is actually accurate.

I only have four or five carriers. Is this overkill?+

Underpayments and clawback windows exist whether you write for four carriers or fourteen. The dollar amount scales; the blind spot does not.

How much work is setup?+

Connecting your carrier statements and bank accounts once. After that reconciliation runs monthly and your accountant flags anything that does not match.

What does it cost?+

Plans start at $249 a month, flat, covering books, quarterly estimates, payroll, and the year-end return.

Close the gap before Q4 renewals

The distance between a good-looking dashboard and an accurate one is where agents lose thousands without knowing it. Thirty minutes with an agent accountant will show you what you earned, what is still owed, and what your book is worth.
