FOR PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES

I Reviewed 40 Pro Athletes' Business Taxes. One Signing Bonus Mistake Cost $127,500.

(Big Number In, Bigger Number Out, Nobody Flagged The Difference)

Business taxes for a pro athlete are not the beast that hits a W-2 employee, and treating them the same is how seven-figure earners end up owing six figures they never saved. I spent this offseason reviewing the books of 40 athletes across three leagues. This is what happened to one linebacker's $850,000 signing bonus, and what to do before your next contract lands.

Forty athletes. Three leagues. One pattern.

$127,500

shortfall on one $850,000 signing bonus

I'd made more money by 24 than most people make in a lifetime, and I still felt like I had no idea where it was actually going. Now I get a number I trust every month, not just a form in April.

The linebacker · Second contract, 8-state schedule

01

Your business taxes cross eight state lines. Yours did.

Every state you play a game in wants a piece of what you earned that day. The jock tax applies per game, per state, so one road trip through Illinois, California, and New York can trigger three separate returns for one week of work. One linebacker we worked with played in 8 states in a single season and had never filed in more than 2. His prior preparer missed it entirely.

Do this today: Pull last season's schedule and count the states. If it is more than 3 and your accountant only filed in your home state, you have a problem that compounds every year.

One season, 8 states played in, 2 states filed in. The other six were still waiting.

Nobody is auditing your agent's invoice but you

Agent fees, advisor fees, and planner cuts all come out before you ever see the number, and almost none of it gets reviewed line by line. A 3 percent agent fee on a $6.2 million contract is $186,000. Nobody checks whether it was calculated on the right base, applied to bonuses it should not have touched, or double-charged across a renegotiation. Athletes who ask for the itemized breakdown almost always find something.

Do this today: Request an itemized invoice from every advisor, agent, or manager taking a cut this month. If they hesitate, that hesitation is the answer.

Your signing bonus is not taxed the way you think

Signing bonuses are withheld as supplemental wages at a flat federal 22 percent, regardless of the bracket you actually land in. If your real effective rate is closer to 37 percent once state and local taxes stack up, that gap waits for you at filing time. The linebacker's $850,000 bonus had $187,000 withheld. His actual liability was $314,500, and nobody told him to set the rest aside.

Do this today: Every time a bonus hits, calculate the gap between what was withheld and your real effective rate, and move that difference to a separate account the same week.

The business taxes nobody is tracking in real time

Behind every mistake above is the same pattern: nobody was watching the money as it moved. State filings, agent fees, and the bonus withholding gap all show up on paper eventually, but by the time a generalist preparer catches them the season is over and the cash is spent. Amadae's real accountants run quarterly estimates that account for every state you played in and every bonus taxed differently than salary, the week a check hits. Books, payroll, and taxes in one flat monthly price, and you know your real number every month of the season.

Summer is your planning window, not just your reward lap

Offseason feels like the payoff: trips, training camps, brand shoots, all earned. It is also the only stretch of the year with enough breathing room to plan. The players who come back for the next contract in a stronger position used June and July to model next season's tax exposure while they still had time to act, not waiting for the accountant to call in March.

Do this today: Block two hours this month with your tax advisor to model next season's income before the schedule drops.

Two hours in June modeling next season's income beats a scramble in April, every time.

06

Your career has an expiration date. Your tax plan should assume it.

The average pro career lasts 3 to 6 years. Most tax strategies are built like the income will last 30. That mismatch is how athletes with $10 million in career earnings end up with a retirement account that reflects a much smaller number. A solo 401(k) built around endorsement or LLC income, timed to your highest-earning years, shelters real money while the window is open.

Do this today: Ask whether your retirement contributions are sized for a 6-year career or a 30-year one. If nobody can answer clearly, that is the tell.

Built for a 3 to 6 year career

  • Solo 401(k) on endorsement or LLC income
  • Contributions timed to peak-earning years
  • Multi-state filings tracked game by game
  • Every bonus gap calculated the day it lands
  • A plan sized for 30 years of this income
  • Waiting until year 5 of a 4-year career

Bonus: The review that caught the $127,500 before it happened twice

Once the linebacker moved his accounting to Amadae, the same bonus structure showed up on his next contract: same 22 percent withholding, same real liability near 37 percent. This time the gap was flagged within a week of the payment, not discovered at filing. Multi-state filings, agent fee audits, and bonus gaps, all tracked before they turn into a six-figure surprise.

I'd made more money by 24 than most people make in a lifetime, and I still felt like I had no idea where it was actually going. Now I get a number I trust every month, not just a form in April.

Questions creators ask us

My agent's team already handles my taxes.+

Ask them how many state returns they filed for you last season and whether they checked their own invoice against your contract. If either answer is slow, that is the gap. The intro call is a second set of eyes, not a replacement you have to commit to.

I only have a few seasons left. Is it worth changing now?+

That is exactly when it matters most. A short window means every bonus, every state, and every retirement contribution has to be right the first time, because there is no year 10 to make it up.

What does it cost?+

Plans start at $249 a month, flat. No hourly bills, no percentage of your contract.
